It will be hard for anybody to top the outrageous offense show that Caprock and Snyder opened the season with at Dick Bivins Stadium. The two teams combined for 1,210 yards and 64 points in the fourth quarter. Caprock’s Michael Guerrero threw for 454 yards and eight touchdowns and ran for another, and Addison Bustos had 14 catches for 308 yards and five touchdowns.
Tulia 30
Clarendon 28
A year after winning only one game, Tulia is guaranteed of at least equaling last year’s total after a win over Clarendon. Brandon Jackson came up big for the Hornets, running for 144 yards and a touchdown, catching a touchdown pass and returning an interception 68 yards for a score. Clarendon rallied in the fourth quarter but couldn’t convert a two-point pass to tie the game.
Dimmitt 25
Farwell 19
Dimmitt won a thrilling opener on the road at Farwell, as quarterback Eric Oltivero ran 4 yards for a touchdown with five seconds left to pull out the win. Oltivero threw for 248 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 67 yards. Farwell had two 100-yard rushers as Kolten Morris had 119 yards and Collin Christian ran for 117 yards and two touchdowns and threw for another.
Vega 21
Highland Park 12
Vega rallied to score a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter and spoil the debut of new Highland Park coach Craig Shores. Vega’s Payson Bain ran for 102 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. Highland Park’s Justin McDonald had a respectable varsity debut by throwing for 175 yards and two touchdowns, but Vega intercepted him three times.
Palo Duro 42
Tascosa 21
In a mild surprise in Thursday’s nondistrict opener between Amarillo ISD teams, Class 4A Palo Duro rolled over Class 5A Tascosa. PD’s Anthony McLain ran for 138 yards and two touchdowns and Antaun Turner had 129 yards and four touchdowns to account for all of the Dons’ scoring. Palo Duro shut out Tascosa in the first half.
Bushland 47
Borger 23
Another minor upset where a lower classification team (Class 2A Bushland) decisively beat a bigger school (Class 3A Borger) in an opener. Bushland quarterback Taylor Cornelius threw for 372 yards and six touchdowns and Tyler Adams had eight catches for 259 yards and four touchdowns for the Falcons.
