Harper Scofield of Dalhart was the only Panhandle-area player named to the first-team on the Class 3A Associated Press' All-State Football Team released Tuesday.
Scofield was a standout defensive lineman for the Golden Wolves, who reached the playoffs for a school-record fourth straight year. He had 92 tackles, eight sacks, three caused fumbles, three fumble recoveries and blocked one punt that he returned for a touchdown.
''Harper is a tremendous young man and one of the hardest working players I've seen,'' said Dalhart head coach Stephen Young.
''No matter what he does, from football to basketball to track, he works as hard as he can to improve constantly.
''And, the best thing about him is he is a junior and will be playing for us again next year.''
In addition to Scofield, Perryton running back Shane Hodge and defensive back Jake Holguin were named honorable mention.
The 3A offensive player of the year went to senior quarterback Darian Godfrey of Gilmer. Godfrey threw for 2,772 yards and 35 touchdowns, along with rushing for 13 touchdowns. He led Gilmer to the 3A Division I state championship. They defeated Abilene Wylie, 43-26.
Godfrey was one of four Gilmer players named to the first team.
Senior defensive lineman Jacoby Alexander of Van was voted the defensive player of the year. Alexander made 85 tackles, recorded 20 quarterback sacks and 29 quarterback hurries.
The second team quarterback has a familiar last name and a famous brother. Graham senior Case McCoy is the second team quarterback behind Godfrey and is the younger brother of Texas quarterback Colt McCoy.
