Fourteen minutes into Friday’s game Tascosa had lit the scoreboard for 17 points — three more than it had totaled the previous three games.
Unfortunately for Tascosa fans, the home score on the Dick Bivins Stadium scoreboard never budged again.
Tascosa saw its fast start slowly fade away the final 2½s quarters, eventually giving way to the foot of Odessa Permian kicker Christian Anchondo and dropping a 20-17 District 2-5A game to the Panthers before a Homecoming crowd of 6,500 fans.
Anchondo’s pair of 26-yard field goals were the only points scored in the second half, his final trey with 5:33 remaining providing
Tascosa scrapped back with two possessions following the Permian’s junior last field goal, but were unable to move past midlfield.
“I’m super disappointed,” said Tascosa coach Ken Plunk, his team dropping to 0-5. “But I’m not discouraged. I was proud the way the kids fought.”
Tascosa was not only trying to snag its first win of the season but trying to end a 13-game losing streak to Permian dating to 1968.
“I was thinking the whole game, this was our night,” said Tascosa senior two-way player Tion Wright, who hauled in a 68-yard touchdown pass with 10:10 to play in the half, putting the Rebs ahead 17-7. “We had the momentum. We were moving the ball early. We wanted this one. We wanted this one more than anything.”
Tascosa entered having scored 21 points in its three previous games, but by halftime had scored those 17 points thanks to taking advantage of two fumbles and a hustle play by Wright.
Tascosa defensive lineman Travis Lawler pounced on a botched handoff, Permian’s first offensive play of the game, at the Permian 13-yard line igniting Tascosa’s strong 14 opening minutes.
Tascosa settled for a Brock Yarbrough 24-yard field after the fumble, then went up 10-0 after the first quarter when Cahlil Porter alertly pounced on teammate Peyton Brooks’ fumble into the end zone.
Permian did respond by giving Tascosa a dose of what would be in store when running back Jorrion Wilson hauled in a 39-yard pass from Jack Wilkins early in the second quarter.
However, Tascosa had answered Permian by halftime when quarterback Tucker Davidson found Wright on the sideline. Wright whirled around and ran for 68 yards, putting the Rebs ahead 17-7 early in the second quarter.
“The ball was supposed to go to the other side,” Wright said. “But I told (Davidson) I’d be open. I just caught it and turned and ran.”
Tascosa would allow Permian a touchdown before halftime, then botched a chance to add more points with back-to-back 15-yard penalties set up Tascosa at the Permian 10-yard line late.
Eventually, Tascosa went for a fake field goal and the played never materialized.
The second half was pretty much all Permian, or Wilson and Anchondo.
Permian opened the second half with a 17-play drive that chewed up 6:31 off the clock. Wilson carried 10 of the 17 plays and would finish carrying 36 times for 186 yards.
“Jorrion really made a big difference in the second half,” said Permian coach Gary Gaines, who spent a year in the early 1980s as the Tascosa head coach. “It was a hard-fought game. We were worried we had to settle for field goals, but we felt like we needed points.”
Tascosa finished with 225 yards of offense and seemed slowed with fullback Austyn Beasley was unable to play in the second half. Davidson threw for 124 yards and ran for 51 yards out of the option offense.
Wilson was Permian’s offense catching 68 yards receiving and running for the season-high 186 yards.
