In a clash between Bushland’s prolific passing offense and Dalhart’s stingy defense, Dalhart came through on both sides of the ball in the second half. Bushland took a 22-21 halftime lead as Taylor Cornelius threw two touchdown passes, but the Golden Wolves shut out Bushland in the second half. With 3:12 remaining in the game, Dalhart’s Zach Richardson completed his only pass of the game, a 64-yard touchdown to Tone Gonzales that gave the Wolves the lead for good.
River Road 15
The Wildcats broke a 12-game losing streak and gave coach Jayme Carr his first win at River Road by beating Friona. Kale Norman figured in both of River Road’s touchdowns, as threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Payton Pierce and scored on a 1-yard run. Coincidentally, River Road’s last regular season win was a 28-12 win over Friona in in the 2010 season.
It’s become redundant, but Caprock put up yet another huge game throwing the ball against Estacado on Thursday. Addison Bustos had one of the best receiving games in state history with 13 catches for 392 yards (confirmed in a review of game film by Caprock coach Seth Parr), which was 2 yards short of a state record. More importantly for the Longhorns, they had their best defensive performance of the season, coming up with some key stops late.
In what might have been the upset of the evening Friday, Gruver rallied to beat Sunray when Beau Blankenship caught a 3-yard touchdown pass from Korbin Irwin with 21 seconds left to beat Sunray for the first time since 1988. Gruver’s victory broke a 13-game regular season winning streak by Sunray, which got two touchdown runs and a scoring pass from Christian Axelsen in the loss.
WF Rider 26
Amarillo High 17
Amarillo High, ranked No. 6 in Class 4A, didn’t get to enjoy its ranking long, as the Sandies fell victim to a late touchdown when Rider quarterback J.T. Barrett scored on a 1-yard run with nine seconds to go for the winning score. The Raiders scored the last 19 points of the game after the Sandies took a 17-7 lead in the third quarter.
Highland Park 14
Bovina picked up its first win of the season by beating Highland Park. Marco Terrones ran for 83 yards on eight carries and scored two touchdowns in the first quarter on a 16-yard run and on a 36-yard blocked punt return. Trenton Morgan scored both of Highland Park’s touchdowns, but the Hornets couldn’t overcome the early deficit.
